Skills through Design: Online Visual Course for kids to develop reasoning & mental flexibility using Canva & PowerPoint

Most learning programs teach children what to do. Very few teach them how to understand, compare and transfer what they learn.
At codePannu, we realised this is the real gap in children’s learning today.
Children know how to operate devices. They can click, drag, search and install. But do they slow down to compare? Do they notice patterns across tasks? Can they transfer what they learned in one place to a new and unfamiliar situation?
This is where real reasoning begins.
And this is exactly where most courses stop.
Why children need more than tool skills
Tool skills age fast. Interfaces change, buttons move and features get updated. What stays with a child for the long term is not the tool itself, but the ability to reason through tasks, recognise repeating patterns and apply what they know in new contexts.
These abilities shape the way a child learns every new subject. They help in schoolwork, projects and even everyday problem solving. They form the base of learning that lasts.
But children develop these skills only when they work with the same idea in more than one context. When they switch between tools or situations, the brain begins to connect ideas and carry learning forward.
This insight shaped our Skill through Design course. A course that strengthens reasoning, pattern recognition and transferable learning
The simple idea behind the course
Skill through Design is an exploration based course that uses PowerPoint and Canva as the playground. But it is not a design course. It is a reasoning course hidden inside a design activity.
Children perform similar tasks on both platforms. As they do this, something powerful starts to happen. They compare. They notice differences. They notice similarities. They question why one step is easier in one place than the other. They figure out alternatives. They start recognising patterns that repeat across both tools.
Slowly, without any lecture, they begin to transfer what they learned from one environment to another.
This is the core of transferable learning where kids dont memorise and nothing is instructed to them. It’s just built through experience.
What children gain from this process
Reasoning
They understand why a choice works, not just how to do it.
1) Pattern recognition
They see the underlying structure behind tasks instead of treating everything as new.
2) Transferable learning
They take an idea from one place and confidently apply it elsewhere.
These are the skills that remain steady even when the tools change.
Why this approach works
When children practice the same concept across different platforms, the brain forms links.
Ideas strengthen, learning becomes organised and knowledge becomes usable everywhere.
This is the difference between steps that fade and skills that stick.
Our final note
Skill through Design helps children grow into learners who can reason clearly, recognise patterns quickly and adapt their learning across any tool or subject. It prepares them not just for the tasks in front of them, but for every new idea they will meet in the future.
