Why a Degree is no longer enough in India

For a long time, the path to a successful career seemed straightforward.
Study hard. Earn a degree with good marks. Get a good job.
For many families, this formula worked for decades. A degree with good marks was considered a reliable indicator of a person’s knowledge, discipline and potential. Employers also used academic performance as one of the primary ways to compare candidates.
Today, the hiring landscape looks different. A degree with good marks continues to be valuable, but it is no longer enough on its own.
So, what changed?
A degree is too common
As the number of graduates has increased, employers receive a much larger number of applications for every role. Many candidates now have similar degrees and similar academic records.
A degree with good marks continues to reflect academic achievement. However, it does not always help employers distinguish one candidate from another or understand how well that candidate will perform in the workplace.
This has led organisations to look beyond academic qualifications.
Practical skills have become an important part of the hiring process because they demonstrate how candidates apply what they have learned. Projects, portfolios, internships and other practical experiences provide employers with additional evidence of a candidate’s workplace capability and readiness.
The workplace has changed
The nature of work has also changed significantly over the years.
Many organisations today work in fast moving environments where technologies, tools and customer needs continue to evolve. Teams are expected to adapt quickly, solve new problems and learn continuously.
As a result, employers increasingly look for people who can contribute from the beginning and continue learning on the job.
This does not mean fresh graduates are expected to know everything.
It means they are expected to possess the practical skills needed to apply their knowledge, learn independently and become productive within a shorter period of time.
For many organisations, especially startups and growing businesses, extensive training after hiring is no longer practical. Candidates who already have experience applying their knowledge through projects, internships or other practical work are therefore often better prepared for the workplace.
The workplace has not become less academic.
It has become more application oriented.
A degree still matters
None of these changes reduce the importance of a college degree.
A degree continues to provide the knowledge and academic foundation required for a profession. Good marks continue to reflect effort, discipline and academic achievement.
What has changed is what employers expect in addition to those qualifications. A degree with good marks is no longer the complete picture.
Employers increasingly look for evidence that candidates can apply what they have learned in practical situations.
As the workplace continues to evolve, academic learning and skill development will continue to go hand in hand. Preparing students for the future is no longer about choosing one over the other. It is about developing both together.
